On June 17th, 2011, the City of Lyon, France, has launched a new version of its mapping applications portal, granting access to more than 20 interactive maps, all deployed with AIGLE™ Générateur.

The first version of Lyon’s GIS portal, implemented in 2003, was mainly created as a tool for the city’s agents. It was composed of a set of general or thematic maps, in static or dynamic format. After the first 8 years of use, the conclusions drawn about Géolyon are positive, as it meets the users’ expectations. But in order to harmonize the technologies and implement new functionalities, an upgrade was necessary.

The new version results from a collaborative work between the GIS department and the managers of the various divisions. Two major technological evolutions enabled its completion :

  • The commissioning of the AIGLE version 4.1 and then 4.4 and of its Flex® Pro and Standard canvas, offering more ergonomic and more graphical interfaces.
  • The modification that was operated by Business Geografic, moving from a file-based storage to a PostGIS structured database, enabled the optimization of the performances of the applications and the creation of a common database for all the public and LOB applications.

"On the 17th June, we published a richer, modernized and updated offer online, which will enable us to boost the visits to the application" says Paul Le Corre, Head of the GIS-Cartography Unit, which is part of the Information Systems and Telecommunications Department.

Indeed, GéoLyon’s new version not only offers a more ergonomic interface, but also latest generation mapping applications thanks to AIGLE 4.4. These applications offer new functionalities, such as more complete information sheets thanks to the tab system and a link to Google Streetview, which is very useful to locate an address, a building or urban furniture.

AIGLE Générateur, that has been used by the city of Lyon since 2005, enabled the deployment of many intranet applications:

  • Thematic maps (Lyon’s Heritage, Perimeters and zoning, Rights in land and local development plan, Social housing, Renovation of façades, Urban and architectural heritage, Clean façades contracts (policy that enables people to clean off tags from their façades), Advertising regulation, Green spaces, Street lighting, Traffic management, Fines, Video protection, Noisy streets, Education and childhood, Telecom subscriptions).
  • General maps (Aerial images and maps, Cadastral map, Aerial images since 1997, French administrative borders).

Web mapping applications, also built with AIGLE and its Standard canvas, will be available from Lyon.fr’s future website, which is to be launched this autumn
